**In short:** Most Bushnell rangefinder problems come down to a flat or poorly fitted battery, an unfocused eyepiece, a dirty or fogged lens, or the wrong mode. Fit a fresh CR2 cell or fully charge a rechargeable model, focus the eyepiece, clean both lenses and check the mode. If it still fails, contact Bushnell or the retailer.

A rangefinder that stops working on the first tee is frustrating, but the fix is usually simple. Bushnell golf lasers share common causes of trouble: battery, optics, settings and moisture. This guide works through checks in the order most likely to solve the problem, from a blank display to readings that jump to the trees. Exact button sequences differ between models such as the Tour V6 Shift, Tour V7 Shift and A1-Slope, so keep your manual or Bushnell's support pages to hand for model-specific steps.

## Quick checks by symptom

| Symptom | First check |
| --- | --- |
| Will not turn on | Battery: fresh CR2 or full charge, fitted the right way |
| Display dim or flickering | Battery low; replace or charge |
| Display blurry | Eyepiece dioptre focus |
| Reads trees, not the flag | Steady hold, aim at flagstick, flag mode active |
| No reading at all | Lens dirty or fogged, target too far or not reflective |
| Odd plays-like numbers | Slope mode on when you expected it off |

Symptoms and the first thing to check

## 1. Check the battery first

A weak battery is the most common cause of a blank or dim display, slow readings or a device that turns off mid-round. Many Bushnell Tour models take a CR2 lithium cell, and the Tour V6 Shift and Tour V7 Shift listings both state a CR2 battery is included. The A1-Slope listing states a built-in rechargeable battery charged via USB-C. Fit a new CR2 the right way round, checking the polarity marks in the compartment, and make sure the battery door is fully closed and sealed. For a rechargeable model, charge it fully with the supplied cable.

Cold weather reduces battery output, so a cell that works in summer may struggle on a frosty morning. Our [Bushnell battery guide](https://pinandyard.co.uk/blog/bushnell-rangefinder-battery) covers which models use which battery.

## 2. Focus the eyepiece and clean the lenses

If the display is on but blurry, turn the eyepiece dioptre until the reticle and numbers are sharp. Then clean both the eyepiece and the front objective lens with a microfibre cloth. Fingerprints, rain drops and sun cream all scatter the laser and the image. If the inside of the lens is misted, the device has taken on moisture: let it warm up and dry slowly indoors with the battery removed, not on a radiator.

1. Turn the dioptre ring slowly until the display text is crisp.
2. Blow off grit, then wipe both lenses with a clean microfibre cloth.
3. If misted inside, remove the battery and leave it somewhere warm and dry.
4. Try a reading on a large target such as a tree or building.

## 3. Check the mode and settings

Bushnell lasers have several modes, such as PinSeeker for flags and scan for sweeping across a hole, plus slope on models that have it. If you get the background instead of the flag, make sure the flag mode is active and hold the device steady with both hands. If plays-like numbers look odd, check whether slope is on; on the Tour V6 Shift it is controlled by an external switch, on the A1-Slope through the mode button. Also check units, as a reading in metres can look like an error if you expect yards.

## 4. Reset and retry

Many electronic devices recover from a glitch after the battery is taken out for a short while. For a CR2 model, remove the battery, wait a minute and refit it. For rechargeable models the reset method varies, so follow the manual. Then test the laser on a large, close target such as a wall or tree at 50 to 100 yards before trying a flag.

## 5. When to contact Bushnell

If a fresh battery, clean lenses, the right mode and a reset do not help, or if there is physical damage, a rattle, water inside the display or a cracked lens, stop using it and contact Bushnell's support or the retailer. Do not open the housing, which may affect any warranty. Have your model number, proof of purchase and a description of the fault ready. If you are thinking of replacing it, our [rangefinder buying guide](https://pinandyard.co.uk/best/best-golf-rangefinders) compares current models.

Note: Do not try to repair the laser module yourself. Makers describe golf lasers as Class 1 products in normal use, but a damaged unit should not be used. Never look at the sun through the optics.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my Bushnell rangefinder keep reading the trees?** The aiming circle is probably drifting past the flag, or the device is not in its flag priority mode. Brace your arms, aim at the flagstick and use PinSeeker.

**Why is my Bushnell display blank?** Usually a flat or wrongly fitted battery. Fit a new CR2 or fully charge a rechargeable model, and check the battery door is closed.

**My rangefinder is misted inside. What should I do?** Remove the battery and let it dry slowly at room temperature. If the mist does not clear, contact Bushnell or the retailer.
