**In short:** Most golf GPS problems come from a weak satellite fix, out of date course maps or software, or a phone pairing issue. Go outside with a clear view of the sky and wait for a fix, update courses and software through the maker's app or desktop software, restart the device and re-pair it with your phone. If one course is still missing, contact the maker.

There are few things more irritating than standing on the first tee while your GPS watch says no course found. The good news is that the causes are usually simple and the fixes work across brands, whether you use a Garmin, Shot Scope, Bushnell, Voice Caddie or a handheld unit. This guide goes through the checks in order, from satellite signal to course libraries, and explains when distances look wrong and how to tell whether the map or the device is at fault. Menu names differ between brands, so keep your manual or the maker's support pages handy.

## Quick checks by symptom

| Symptom | First check |
| --- | --- |
| No course found | Satellite fix outdoors, then course update |
| Wrong course or loop | Select the correct course or nine manually |
| Distances jump around | Signal, tree cover, wait a minute |
| Distances wrong on one hole | Course map out of date |
| Will not sync | Phone Bluetooth, app login, re-pair |
| Battery dies mid-round | Charge fully, GPS battery figure, cold weather |

Symptoms and first checks

## 1. Get a good satellite fix

A golf GPS needs a clear view of the sky to find your position. If you switch it on inside the clubhouse, in the car or under trees, it may struggle. Go outside into open space, start the golf mode and wait a minute or two while it finds satellites. Devices that use more than one satellite system, such as the Garmin Approach S44 which lists GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, may lock faster. After a long gap without use or travel to a new area, the first fix can take longer.

1. Go outside with a clear view of the sky.
2. Open the golf mode and wait for the satellite indicator to show a fix.
3. Stay still for a moment; walking under trees can slow it down.
4. Once fixed, the device should list nearby courses.

## 2. Update courses and software

If the device has a fix but not your course, the map library may be out of date, especially for a new or redesigned course. Update through the maker's route: the Garmin Golf app or Garmin Express for Garmin, the Shot Scope app for Shot Scope and so on. Install any device software updates at the same time. Our [Garmin update guide](https://pinandyard.co.uk/blog/how-to-update-garmin-golf-courses) gives detailed steps for that brand.

Canmore's HG500 listing says to contact Canmore directly to add new courses or suggest fixes, which is a reminder that every brand has its own process for missing courses.

## 3. Check phone pairing and the app

Many watches sync scores and courses through a phone app. If syncing fails, check that Bluetooth is on, the app is signed in and allowed to run in the background, and the phone's location permission is enabled for the app. Removing the device from the app and pairing it again fixes many sync problems. Restart both the watch and the phone before you do.

## 4. Restart or reset

Turning the device off and on again clears many glitches. If problems persist, the manual will describe a soft reset that keeps your data. A full factory reset should be a last resort, since it may remove scores and settings; sync first so nothing is lost.

## When distances look wrong

Small differences of a few yards from course markers are normal, since markers and maps are measured differently. Large errors on one hole usually mean the map is out of date. Errors on every hole suggest the wrong course or loop has been selected, or a poor satellite fix. ## When to contact the maker

If the device will not get a fix anywhere, will not charge, shows a damaged screen or a single course stays missing after updates, contact the maker's support or your retailer with the model, software version and course name. Our [GPS watch guide](https://pinandyard.co.uk/best/best-golf-gps-watches) lists maker details and warranty terms where listings state them.

Note: Do not open the watch or try to replace a built-in battery yourself. Lithium batteries can be damaged by improper handling; use the maker's service.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my golf watch say no course found?** Usually it has not got a satellite fix yet, or the course is missing from its library. Wait outdoors for a fix, then update courses.

**Why are my GPS distances different from the course markers?** Small differences are normal. Big differences on one hole suggest an outdated map; report it to the maker.

**Does cold weather affect golf GPS?** Cold reduces battery performance, so the device may shut down earlier. Keep it charged and under your sleeve between shots.
