In short
Yes, you can get golf GPS on a Samsung Galaxy Watch. Newer Galaxy Watch models run Wear OS, so you can install a golf GPS app from the Google Play Store on the watch or through your phone, sign in and download your course. Expect shorter battery life than a dedicated golf watch, and check that the app supports your model and works without the phone if you want to leave it in the bag.

Many golfers already wear a Samsung Galaxy Watch and do not want a second watch just for golf. A smartwatch has GPS, a bright screen and an app store, so it can do much of what a golf watch does. The catch is that it depends on third party apps and uses more battery. This guide explains which Galaxy Watches can run golf apps, how to install and use one, what to expect on the course and when a dedicated golf watch is still the better choice. App names and features change often, so check the current app store listing before relying on any feature.
Which Galaxy Watches can run golf apps?
Samsung moved its watches to Wear OS, the smartwatch system from Google, from the Galaxy Watch4 onwards. These models can install apps from the Google Play Store, including golf GPS apps. Older Galaxy Watches ran Samsung's own Tizen system with a smaller choice of apps, and support for many of those has ended.
Samsung has also sold Golf Edition versions of some Galaxy Watches bundled with a golf app. If you have one, the golf app is already included. Note that Galaxy Watches pair best with Android phones; check Samsung's current compatibility information if you use an iPhone.
Choosing a golf app
Several established golf apps offer a Wear OS version that shows front, middle and back of green distances on the watch, and some add hazards, scoring and shot tracking. Look for these points in the Play Store listing:
- Wear OS support for your watch model.
- Standalone mode, so the watch works without the phone nearby.
- Your home course in the course list.
- Which features are free and which need a subscription.
- Recent updates and support contacts.
Installing and setting up
The exact steps depend on the app, but the general process is the same.
- 1
Update the watch and the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- 2
Install the golf app on your phone, then on the watch through the Play Store or the phone app.
- 3
Open the app on your phone, create an account and sign in.
- 4
Open the app on the watch and allow location permission.
- 5
Download your course in advance over Wi-Fi if the app allows it.
- 6
Start a round near the first tee and check the hole number and distances.
On the course
Start the round on the first tee so the watch has a GPS fix. Most apps advance holes automatically; if not, swipe or press to change. Keep the screen set to wake on wrist raise so you can glance at the number without pressing anything. Score keeping is easier on the phone between holes if the watch screen feels small.
Distances are as good as the app's course map and your watch's GPS fix. If numbers jump, wait a few seconds after you stop walking. Our how golf GPS watches work explains what affects accuracy.
Battery tips
A smartwatch running GPS and a bright screen for four hours uses a lot of battery. Charge fully before a round, turn off features you do not need such as always on display and continuous heart rate, and lower the screen brightness if it is still readable. Close the golf app after the round. If the watch still struggles, a dedicated golf watch with a long GPS battery life may suit you better.
Rules matter too. Under Rule 4.3 of the Rules of Golf, published by The R&A, distance information is allowed unless a Local Rule bans devices, but features such as slope or plays like distances and club recommendations must be off in competition. Many apps have a tournament mode.
Smartwatch or golf watch?
A Galaxy Watch with a good app is a convenient option if you already own one. A dedicated golf watch usually lasts longer on GPS, has buttons that work with gloves and wet hands, needs no app subscription on many models and has courses preloaded. Frequently asked questions
Does the Galaxy Watch have golf GPS built in? Standard models do not include a golf app, but Golf Edition versions came bundled with one. Others need an app from the Play Store.
Can I leave my phone in the bag? Yes, if the app has a standalone mode and the course is downloaded. Check the listing.
Is a Galaxy Watch accurate enough for golf? It uses satellite GPS like a golf watch. Accuracy depends on the app's course maps and a good fix.
