In short
Most trolley accessories fit in one of three ways: into a dedicated accessory station or socket on the handle (as on many Motocaddy and PowaKaddy trolleys), with a universal clamp around a frame tube, or onto the handle console. Check which system your trolley uses, fit the base firmly, then attach the accessory and test it with a load before you play.

Umbrella holders, scorecard holders, drinks holders and phone mounts turn a basic trolley into a comfortable way to get round in British weather. Fitting them is usually simple, but each brand has its own system and the wrong accessory will wobble, twist in the wind or not fit at all. This guide explains the main fitting systems, gives step by step instructions for the most common accessories and lists the checks that stop them working loose. Always follow the fitting instructions supplied with the accessory.
Know your trolley's fitting system
Before buying anything, find out how accessories attach to your trolley. Many Motocaddy trolleys have accessory points on or near the handle designed for Motocaddy's own accessories. PowaKaddy and other brands have their own fittings. Push trolleys often have a console with sockets for an umbrella holder and a cup holder. Universal accessories use a clamp that fits round a frame tube of a given diameter.
- Brand accessory station or socket: secure and neat, but fits that brand only.
- Universal clamp: fits many trolleys if the tube diameter matches.
- Console socket: common on push trolleys for umbrellas and cups.
- Strap or bracket: used for some phone and GPS holders.
Fitting an umbrella holder
The umbrella holder takes the most load, because wind acts on a large canopy at the end of a long lever. Fit it to the strongest point the maker recommends, usually close to the handle.
- 1
Find the accessory point or the frame tube recommended by the maker.
- 2
Fit the base and tighten any screw or lever firmly.
- 3
Insert the holder tube and adjust it so the umbrella sits above your head when walking.
- 4
Fit an extender if the umbrella is too low to walk under.
- 5
Open an umbrella in the holder and push the trolley a few metres to check it does not twist or tilt.
Note:In strong wind, take the umbrella out of the holder. A gust can tip a trolley over or snap the holder, and an electric trolley may pull unexpectedly.
Scorecard, drinks and phone holders
Scorecard holders usually clip to the handle console or an accessory point and should sit where you can write without bending. Drinks holders fit the same way; choose one that holds the cup upright when the trolley crosses a slope. Phone holders and GPS mounts need a secure grip and, ideally, a cover for rain. On electric trolleys, avoid placing a phone holder where it blocks the controls or display.
If you use a GPS speaker or rangefinder with a magnet, note that many trolley frames are aluminium and a magnet will not stick. A strap mount or the maker's own holder is more reliable. Golf GPS speaker vs GPS watch covers mounting questions.
Fitting universal accessories
Universal clamps are sold for a range of tube diameters. Measure the frame tube where you plan to fit the clamp, and choose a clamp in that range. Some come with rubber spacers for smaller tubes. Fit the clamp where it does not interfere with folding. Fold and unfold the trolley after fitting to check nothing catches.
Over time clamps can loosen with vibration, especially on electric trolleys. Check them every few rounds and tighten as needed.
Common problems and fixes
Most accessory problems come from a loose base, the wrong size clamp or an accessory fitted where it catches when folding.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Umbrella twists in wind | Loose base or clamp | Tighten, use the maker's fitting |
| Holder slips down tube | Clamp too large | Use a spacer or smaller clamp |
| Trolley will not fold | Accessory in the fold path | Move the accessory or remove before folding |
| Phone holder rattles | Worn grip or loose bracket | Tighten or replace the holder |
Before every round
A quick check saves dropping a phone or losing an umbrella holder on the first tee. Push and wiggle each accessory, check clamps are tight and remove anything you will not use. In winter, take accessories off after the round so water does not sit under clamps, as explained in how to clean a golf trolley.
Frequently asked questions
Do Motocaddy accessories fit PowaKaddy trolleys? Generally no, because each brand uses its own fittings. Universal clamps are the alternative.
Why does my umbrella holder keep turning? The base or clamp is loose or the wrong size. Tighten it or use the correct size clamp.
Can I fit an umbrella holder to an electric trolley? Yes, most electric trolleys have a fitting point for one. Remove the umbrella in strong wind.
