In short
Garmin golf watches update course maps through the Garmin Golf app on your phone, which syncs over Bluetooth, or through Garmin Express on a computer with a USB cable. Keep the watch software up to date as well. If a course is missing, update first, then check the course in the app and contact Garmin support if it still does not appear.

Garmin Approach watches come with tens of thousands of courses preloaded, but courses change: holes are redesigned, greens rebuilt and new courses open. Keeping maps and watch software current avoids odd distances and missing courses. This guide covers the two update routes Garmin provides, step by step, and what to try when your course is not listed or looks wrong. Menus differ between models and app versions, so treat the steps as a general guide and check Garmin's support pages for your model.
Two ways to update
Garmin provides two routes for updates. The Garmin Golf app on an iPhone or Android phone syncs with the watch over Bluetooth and can update courses and software in the background. Garmin Express is free desktop software for Windows and Mac that updates the watch over its charging and data cable. Most golfers use the app day to day and Express occasionally for a full update.
| Route | Connection | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin Golf app | Bluetooth to your phone | Regular syncs, single courses, scores |
| Garmin Express | USB cable to a computer | Full course library and software updates |
Updating with the Garmin Golf app
The S12 and S44 listings both mention uploading scores to the Garmin Golf app, so the same pairing serves updates and scorekeeping. Course updates can take a while over Bluetooth, so start the sync at home rather than in the car park.
- 1
Install the Garmin Golf app and sign in with your Garmin account.
- 2
Pair the watch with the app, following the on-screen prompts.
- 3
Keep Bluetooth on and the app open while the watch syncs.
- 4
Check the app's device or course settings for available course updates.
- 5
Install any watch software update the app offers, leaving the watch charging if asked.
- 6
On the watch, start a round and confirm your course appears in the list.
Updating with Garmin Express
Express is handy when an app sync stalls or when you have not used the watch for a season. Keep the cable connected throughout; interrupting an update can leave the watch needing a second attempt.
- 1
Download Garmin Express from Garmin's website and install it on your computer.
- 2
Connect the watch with its charging and data cable.
- 3
Add the device in Express and sign in with your Garmin account.
- 4
Install all available updates, including courses and software.
- 5
Wait until Express says the update is complete before unplugging.
Before a trip or a new season
If you are heading to a course you have not played, or taking the watch abroad, run a full sync a day or two before you travel. The watch then has the latest maps and software, and you avoid relying on a weak mobile signal in a car park. After a winter in a drawer, charge the watch fully, connect it to Garmin Express and let it install everything waiting before the first round of the season. It is also a good time to check that your Garmin Golf app is signed in to the right account, so scores land in the right place.
When a course does not show up
Our wider GPS troubleshooting guide covers satellite lock and pairing problems for all brands.
- Make sure the watch has a satellite fix; courses appear by location, so start the round outdoors near the clubhouse.
- Update courses and watch software, then restart the watch.
- Check the course name; some clubs are listed under the club name rather than the course name, or as separate loops.
- Search for the course in the Garmin Golf app to see whether it exists in Garmin's library.
- If the course is new or rebuilt, contact Garmin support with the club's details.
Keeping maps accurate
If distances look wrong on a hole, compare them with known markers such as a 150 yard post. Small differences are normal, but large ones on one hole often mean the hole has changed. Report it through Garmin's support channels so the map can be updated. A laser is a good cross-check; our rangefinder guide compares models.
Note:Use only Garmin's official app and software for updates. Do not install third-party tools that claim to add courses, as they may affect the watch or its warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Do Garmin course updates cost anything? Course updates through the Garmin Golf app and Garmin Express are provided by Garmin. Some extra map features, such as colour CourseView on the S44, need a Garmin Golf membership.
How often should I update my Garmin golf watch? Syncing with the app after each round keeps scores and courses current. A full Express update once or twice a season is a good habit.
Why is my home course missing? Start a round outdoors so the watch can find your location, update the watch, then search in the app. If it still does not appear, contact Garmin support.
