The GT1080HDR is for golfers working with a small room who want a bright picture and a projector that Optoma itself describes as golf simulator ready. Its short throw lens puts a 100 inch image on the screen from just over 3 feet, which keeps the projector close to the screen and out of the way.

  • Dual HDMI, VGA and USB power for a streaming stick, plus a 10 W speaker.

Our take

Throw and shadows

Just over 3 feet is about 0.9 m, one of the shortest throws among the projectors compared here. Optoma notes the short throw lens reduces shadows, which matters in a simulator where you stand between the projector and the screen. The specs give a maximum image of 307 inches.

Mounting it this close means it will sit well in front of where you stand, so check the angle so the ball and your club cannot reach it.

Brightness and resolution

The listing quotes 3,800 lumens for lights-on viewing and a 50,000:1 contrast ratio. Native resolution is 1080p Full HD with support for 4K HDR input, which suits the usual output of simulator software.

Optoma describes the input lag as ultra low but does not give a number in this listing. If a figure matters to you, its sibling lists one.

Connections and sound

Dual HDMI inputs, USB power for a streaming stick, VGA and a built-in 10 W speaker are listed. The USB power port is handy: plug in a streaming stick and you have a big screen for sport between golf sessions without extra cables.

VGA is an older connection but can be useful for an older simulator laptop without HDMI.

Lamp and running costs

This model uses a lamp. Optoma quotes up to 15,000 hours in Eco+ mode, which is long for a lamp, though running in brighter modes will shorten that. A replacement lamp is a cost to plan for over the years.

Against its siblings

The Optoma GT1080HDRx shares the brightness but lists 8.4 ms response at 120 Hz and a 120 inch image from about 1.2 m. The Optoma GT2000HDR switches to laser with a 100 inch image from 1 m. The GT1080HDR suits rooms where the shortest practical throw is the priority.

Verdict

Buy the GT1080HDR if your room is tight and you want a bright 1080p image from under a metre. If you want a published input lag figure, the Optoma GT1080HDRx is the better documented choice, and if you prefer a laser source, step up to the Optoma GT2000HDR.
