Our take

What it measures

PRGR uses Doppler radar to show swing speed, ball speed, carry distance, total distance and smash factor for each club. A switch toggles between carry and total distance, and a scroll button pages through the history of recent shots.

Spin, launch angle and apex are not part of the listing.

Smash factor is ball speed divided by club speed, and it is one of the best quick checks of how centrally you are striking the ball. Seeing it after each shot helps link the feel of a strike with a number.

Ease of use

The listing claims it captures nearly 100 percent of shots without fiddling with placement. A camera screw on the base fits standard tripods. Four AAA alkaline batteries are included, so there is nothing to charge.

Because there is no pairing step, the PRGR is as quick to start as switching on a torch. That makes it practical for a few minutes of practice before a round rather than only dedicated sessions.

Size, weight and durability

At 139 g and 7.7 x 4.3 x 14.3 cm, it is the smallest unit here and fits a bag pocket. It carries an IP54 rating and is listed as water resistant. PRGR gives a 12 month warranty and states spare parts availability of seven years in the EU. The listing notes it also works for tennis, football and baseball.

The country of origin is listed as Japan, where PRGR is a well-established golf brand.

PRGR against the SC200 Plus and SC300i

The Swing Caddie SC200 Plus adds voice distance output and a remote. The Voice Caddie SC300i measures spin and apex and has an app with video. PRGR's advantage is portability and no connectivity at all.

Who it does not suit

Anyone who wants to store sessions in an app, see spin or run a simulator will need something more capable. Golfers who like a spoken readout should choose the SC200 Plus.

Verdict

Buy the PRGR monitor if you want the simplest, most portable way to see speed and distance, with no apps and no charging. For voice output and a remote, the Swing Caddie SC200 Plus is better, and if you want spin and apex, look at the Voice Caddie SC300i.
