The GT1080HDRx is for golfers who want a big, bright image and quick response without paying for 4K or laser. Optoma built it as a gaming projector, and the same traits that suit fast games, short throw and low lag, also suit a home simulator where the ball flight should appear the moment you strike.

Our take

Throw and image size

Optoma states a 120 inch image from four feet away, roughly 1.2 m. That is a generous picture from a short distance, so the projector can hang above or just ahead of the hitting area. The specs list a minimum image of 36.2 inches and a maximum of 307 inches.

Response and refresh

An enhanced gaming mode gives 8.4 ms response at 120 Hz, according to the listing. That is one of the clearest lag figures among the projectors compared here, and it matters for simulator software where any delay between strike and on-screen flight feels odd.

Native resolution is 1920 x 1080, with HDR10 support when a 4K signal is fed in. For most golf software, 1080p is the normal target anyway.

Brightness and colour

The listing gives 3,800 lumens and a 50,000:1 contrast ratio. A six segment colour wheel and support for sRGB and Rec.709 colour profiles are mentioned. That brightness suits garages and spare rooms with some ambient light, which is common in British homes without a dedicated cinema room.

Lamp life and connections

This is a lamp projector. Optoma quotes up to 15,000 hours of lamp life, which it frames as four hours a day for more than ten years. Dual HDMI 1.4a inputs with 3D support are listed for a PC, console or streaming stick.

A lamp also means a warm up period and eventual replacement, something laser models avoid.

Against the other Optoma models

The Optoma GT2000HDR moves to a laser source and throws 100 inches from 1 m, but its listing gives no lag figure. The Optoma GT1080HDR is the sibling with a similar 3,800 lumens and a 100 inch image from just over 3 feet, again without a stated lag number. The GT1080HDRx is the one with the documented response time.

Verdict

Buy the GT1080HDRx if you want a large, bright picture from a short distance and a published low lag figure. If you would rather avoid lamp changes, the Optoma GT2000HDR is the laser alternative, and if 4K detail is the goal, look at the BenQ TK700STi instead.
