Our take
What it shows
The Phantom 3 recognises courses and holes automatically, so there is nothing to select at the first tee. It gives forward, centre and rear distances to the green and shows up to six hazards per hole. GreenView displays the green shape and lets you move the pin to its position on the day.
A shooting distance calculator measures how far your last shot travelled, and a round timer and odometer track the length of your round.
Slope and scoring
Bushnell's patented slope compensated distances are included. The listing does not describe how slope is switched off for competitions, so check that before using it in a medal. Automatic score entry helps keep a scorecard with less effort.
Screen, battery and size
The 3 inch capacitive touchscreen has a resolution of 400 x 400. Battery life is listed at 14 hours, and charging is via USB-C. The unit measures 7.6 x 6 x 7.6 cm and weighs 78 g. A belt clip with a carabiner and a quick start guide are included. This version is neon green.
The size is similar to a small stopwatch, so it clips to a bag pocket or belt without getting in the way of the swing.
Phantom 3 against Bushnell's lasers
The Bushnell A1-Slope, Tour V6 Shift and Tour V7 Shift are lasers that give an exact pin distance when the flag is visible. The Phantom 3 gives green and hazard yardages even on blind holes. Many golfers pair the two types, but if you only want one device, the choice depends on whether you prefer exact pin figures or a broad overview.
Who should look elsewhere
Golfers who want precise distances to the flag will prefer a laser such as the A1-Slope. Those who would rather wear their GPS should look at Garmin's Approach watches.
Anyone who prefers a smartphone app for yardages may also find a dedicated device unnecessary, though the Phantom 3 avoids draining your phone battery.
Verdict
Choose the Bushnell Phantom 3 Slope if you want a light, clip-on GPS with green views, hazards and slope in a simple package. If exact pin distances matter more, the Bushnell A1-Slope laser is the alternative, and for a wearable, the Garmin Approach S44.
