The GenePro G1 is for golfers who carry both a laser and a GPS device and would rather carry one. What sets it apart is a large 2.13 inch AMOLED touchscreen built into a laser rangefinder, giving front, centre and back GPS yardages from more than 43,000 preloaded courses alongside a laser that locks onto the flag.

In its favour

  • The rotating external switch makes the slope state obvious, which suits club competitions.
  • Adds front, centre and back GPS yardages with no subscription, according to the listing.
  • IP65 protection and a rain and fog mode are listed for wet and misty mornings.

Good to know

  • SmartSlope also factors temperature and humidity, so its figures may differ from other brands.
  • No magnet by design, and at 345 g it is bulkier than a pocket laser.

Our take

Two tools in one body

The laser side offers 6x magnification and flag lock with vibration, which Mileseey says works up to 600 yards to a flag with accuracy of half a yard in 0.1 seconds. The GPS side shows dynamic yardages to the front, centre and back of the green, so you have a figure even when the pin is hidden behind a ridge.

Mileseey states there is no subscription, no app and no phone needed, with free lifetime course updates.

SmartSlope and the switch

SmartSlope adjusts distances for elevation, and Mileseey says it also accounts for temperature and humidity. An external rotating switch turns slope off for tournament play, which is clearer than a menu setting and similar in principle to the Bushnell Tour V6 Shift.

Weather and durability

A rain and fog mode is listed with fog-resistant optics, and the housing carries an IP65 rating, which is a step above the IPX4 and IP54 ratings common in this group. The G1 weighs 345 g and charges via USB-C. Mileseey gives a two year warranty.

There is no magnet, deliberately, because Mileseey says it could interfere with the GPS. The included carrying case and snap hook become the way to keep it to hand.

G1 against the Voice Caddie SL3 and Tour V6 Shift

The Voice Caddie SL3 also combines laser and GPS, with green undulation, Putt View and a dual colour OLED, at 226 g. The Bushnell Tour V6 Shift is a pure laser with an external switch and BITE magnet. The G1 is the one with a full touchscreen map.

Who should look elsewhere

If you like to stick your rangefinder to the trolley frame, the lack of a magnet will be a nuisance, and the Nikon Coolshot 50i GII or Tour V6 Shift suit better. Golfers who want the smallest laser possible should look at the Bushnell A1-Slope.

Verdict

Choose the GenePro G1 if you want laser precision and GPS green yardages in one weatherproof device with no fees. If green undulation data appeals, the Voice Caddie SL3 is the alternative, and if you want a magnetic laser with an external switch, the Bushnell Tour V6 Shift.
